Nobel Prize for Literature 2012 Winner Chinese Writer Mo Yan

The winner of the 2012 Nobel prize for literature is announced at the Swedish Academy in Stockholm as Chinese author Mo Yan. Mr Mo Yan won the 2012 Nobel prize for literature on Thursday (11th October 2012) for works which combine "Hallucinatory Realism" with folk tales, history and contemporary life grounded in his native land. Mo Yan is a pen name meaning 'don't speak'. Mo's real name is Guan Moye
The prize, awarded by the Swedish Academy, is worth 8 million kronas ($1.2 million).

S.Vishwanathan is The New MD of State Bank of India (SBI)

The Central Government of India has announced that S Viswanathan is the New Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI). Mr Viswanathan, who was serving as a deputy managing director of the country’s largest lender, earlier headed the state-run bank’s investment banking arm, SBI Capital Markets Ltd. With this, SBI has four managing directors, including Diwakar Gupta, who is also the chief financial officer, Hemant Contractor, who is in charge of international operations and A. Krishna Kumar, who looks after national banking.

Chidambaram is the New Finance Minister

Friends, our Home Minister P.Chidambaram is our country's new finance minister, and his cabinet colleague Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde will step into Mr. Chidambaram's shoes.
The president, as advised by the prime minister, has directed that the portfolios of the following ministers will be re-allocated as follows - P. Chidambaram Finance, Sushilkumar Shinde Home Affairs”  a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique issued Tuesday said . M. Veerappa Moily, Minister of Corporate Affairs, will be assigned additional charge of the ministry of power,” the statement added.

India's First medal winner in London 2012 Olympics - Gagan Narang

Gagan Narang wins a bronze medal in 10m air rifle event in London Olympics. Gagan’s score in the final round — 10.7, 9.7, 10.6, 10.7, 10.4, 10.6, 9.9, 9.5, 10.3, 10.7 (no need to remember all these numbers, we are giving them for the information's sake). Narang, a two-time world record setter, had won four gold medals in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and followed that up with two silver in the Guangzhou Asian Games a month later.

Rupee Hits All Time Low ( 57.12)

The Indian Rupee fell 57.32 against the dollar on Friday (22nd June 2012) on strong demand for the American currency from oil importers, increased capital outflows and concerns over slowdown in global economic growth. Our rupee surpassed previous records in the five-day long losing streak and tumbled Re 1, over 1.6 percent from previous close to 57.32 per dollar in mid-session trade on the forex markets. The rupee has depreciated nearly 3 percent so far this week, its biggest weekly fall since September 23.

Five Year Plans In India

1st Plan : 1951-56
  • Priority giving to Agriculture and Irrigation.
  • "Harrod - Domar" growth model adopted.
  • This is the only plan in which Prices Fell.

2nd Plan : 1956-61
  • PC Mahalanobis prepared this Plan. Priority given to basic and heavy industries. 
  • Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur Steel Plants, ONGC, Ranchi Heavy Engg. Corporation, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Multi-purpose projects - Nagarjuna Sagar, Bhakra Nangal, Hirakud started during this Plan. 
  • Deficit financing Started in this plan.
  • "Socialist pattern of society" is accepted as a goal.

United Nations Organization (UNO) - Part II

International Court of Justice (ICJ) :

Headquarters : The Hague (Netherlands)

Membership : Consists of 15 Judges and one Chief Justice who are elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council for a term of nine years. The chief justice term is 3 years.

Functions : 
  • It gives advisory opinion on legal matters to the bodies and special agencies of the UNO and considers the legal disputes brought before them. 
  • Justice R.S. Pathak, former Chief Justice of India, was elected judge of the ICJ on April 18, 1989.
    • He became the third Indian on whom this honour has been bestowed.
    • The Other two were, Justice B.N.Rao and Justice Nagendra Singh
