India Beats Pakistan by 8 Wickets at World Twenty 20

India beat Pakistan by eight wickets in the Super Eight stage of Cricket’s World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka (held on 30th September 2012). VIRAT Kohli and cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh starred as India thrashed arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets to stay alive in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. India, who would have been knocked out of the tournament had they lost, skittled Pakistan for 128 on a slow pitch and then surpassed the modest target in 17 overs, thanks largely to Kohli's unbeaten 78 off 61 balls. A sell-out crowd of 35,000 at Colombo's Premadasa stadium saw India continue their stranglehold on Pakistan in major world meets. Here an important point to note is Pakistan have never beaten India in either the 50-over World Cup or the World Twenty20, in which they contested a thrilling final in 2007.

Russia’s Nadia Petrova beat defending champion Agnieska Radwanska 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 on Saturday to win the Pan Pacific Open. This is Nadia's 12th Title and for the first time in her career beat three top-10 players in the same week. Those are,

Wrestler Geeta Kumari wins 2nd Medal at Women's Wrestling Championship

Good news to celebrate this weekend, India's Geeta Kumari has won a Bronze Medal in the 55 kilogram category of the World Women's Wrestling Championship at Edmonton, Canada. This is the second Bronze, India got at the championship. Her sister Babita Kumari had earlier won the medal for the country (Read the Complete Story Here). It is for the first time that India had won two medals in the World Women,s Wrestling Championship.

GSAT-10 - The Heaviest Satellite of India Launched successfully

India’s Advanced communication satellite GSAT-10 was successfully launched today (29th September 2102) on board Ariane-5 rocket from Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana )South America). The satellite, 9th in ISRO's present fleet, will be operational in November and add 30 transponders to the domestic INSAT system, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said soon after the launch. According to Bangalore-headquartered ISRO, the spacecraft, carrying 30 communication transponders (12 Ku-band, 12 C-band and six Extended C-Band) was launched about 30 minutes after the blast off from the European launch pad in South America at 2.48 am and was telecasted live by Doordarshan. Also, it has a navigation payload GAGAN that would provide improved accuracy of GPS signals (of better than seven metres) to be used by the Airports Authority of India for civil aviation requirements. This is the second satellite in INSAT/GSAT constellation with GAGAN payload after GSAT-8, launched in May 2011.

The senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Altamas Kabir(64) has been sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India.  Mr Kabir is the 39th Chief Justice of India. He succeeds Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia (completed service of 22 years of  judicial career) . Mr Kabir will serve a tenure of 9 Months till July 2013. He was famous for his landmark judgments like  human rights and election laws.

India to Host Conference of the Parties (CoP-11) on biodiversity - 2012

India is hosting the eleventh Conference of the Parties (CoP-11) to the CBD in Hyderabad. The conference is going to be held on 1st to 19th October 2012. There will be three components of CoP-11: the sixth Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (CoP/MoP-6) to the CBD’s Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to be held from 1-5 October 2012; the CoP-11 to the CBD from 8-19 October 2012; and the High Level Segment of CoP-11 from 16-19 October 2012. These meetings will be held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC). CoP-11 is expected to be the largest such conference to be held in the country, with participation of thousands of delegates from all countries of the world, including Ministers/Vice-Ministers, Ambassadors, senior Government officials, heads and senior officers of UN and multilateral agencies, private sector, academia, civil society organizations etc.

Sandeep Patil is BCCI's new Chief Selector

Former Indian  Indian middle-order batsman and coach Sandeep Patil was on Thursday (27th September 2012) appointed as the Chairman of the National Selection Committee, while Mohinder Amarnath was sacked after serving just one year in the panel. The other four members of the committee include Saba Karim, Roger Binny, Vikram Rathour and Rajinder Singh Hans. The four members of the previous panel that was headed by K. Srikkanth departed from the office after completion of their four years tenure. As the other four selectors completed four-year tenure, Amarnath was the only one expected to continue, but had a fight with the BCCI after wanting to sack Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the captain after India’s loss in Australia.

Public Sector Banks plan common interview for jobs

It may become a lot easier to get a job at nationalized banks. Banks are planning to have a common interview that could open up opportunities in one go in many banks for candidates, who now have to give multiple interviews for jobs in various banks.

Public sector banks, which recruit about 30,000-40,000 people a year on an average, expect to save time and cost once this common interview becomes a reality. As many as 19 banks are expected to give the mandate to Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), to conduct the common interview on their behalf. IBPS also conducts common written test for these banks.

Bill Gates tops the Forbes Richest Americans of 2012 List

Forbes the American business magazine owned by Forbes, Inc., has released its Annual List of the 400 Rrichest Americans on this Wednesday (Dt 19th September 2012). Bill Gates,  the former chief executive and current chairman of Microsoft, the world’s largest personal-computer software company topped the list with $66B. Warren Buffet,  The American business magnate, investor, and philanthropist occupied the 2nd Place with $46B. There are 45 Women on the list. According to Jenna Goudreau of Forbes, most of these women hold the majority of their wealth in companies they built or inherited. At the top of the list of Richest Women (but ranked 6th in the overall list of richest Americans) is Christy Walton, daughter-in-law of Sam Walton (the founder of WalMart). Ranking in second place (eighth overall) is Alice Walten, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton. Two more women from the Walton family landed in 79th and 100th place in the overall list — Ann Walton Kroenke and Nancy Walton Laurie.

Today's afternoon me and my friends made a clay ganesha (Not the one that Parvati made like the legends say, but the simpler shivani version) that we can make for the puja coming up in two days, or even for fun. RBI Cuts CRR to 4.5 Percent and Keeps Repo Rate Unchanged

The Resrve Bank of India today (17th Spetember 2012 - Monday) cut the cash reserve ratio from 4.75 per cent to 4.5 per cent. The central bank took the government’s reforms rendition a note higher by cutting its key cash reserve ratio by 0.25 per cent to increase liquidity flow into the economy. It kept the short term lending and borrowing rates unchanged. The cut in the Cash Reserve Ratio will release Rs 17,000 crore (Rs 170 billion) into the financial system.

Mr Kabir will assume the new charge from 29th September 2012. He will succeed Chief Justice S H Kapadia who will demit office.Born on July 19, 1948 in Kolkata, Justice Kabir did his LLB and MA from University of Calcutta and was made a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on August 6, 1990.  Mr Kabir assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on January 11, 2005 and was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on March 01, 2005 and was made a judge of the Supreme Court of India on September 9, 2005. He is credited with the computerization of the Calcutta High Court and other courts in Kolkata. He was appointed as Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority on January 14, 2010.

Indian author Jeet Thayil in Man Booker Prize Race

Indian author 53-year-old Kerala-born Jeet Thayil's first novel 'Narcopolis', a compelling tale of Mumbai's hazy world of opium addiction, has made it to the six-author short list for the Man Booker Prize 2012 announced recently. 

Apart from Thayil, authors on the short list are Deborah Levy, Hilary Mantel, Alison Moore, Will Self and Tan Twan Eng.

Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said in Colombo on 3 August, India will help Sri Lanka establish a special economic zone to manufacture auto components in Trincomalee. The SEZ would promote exports to the production chains in India.A Joint Task Force on the SEZ would be set up and submit its report within 90 days. Anand Sharma also announced the setting up of a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Sri Lanka.

India, on 2 August, invited Belgium to invest in the upcoming national manufacturing and investments zones (NMIZs) with a focused approach in energy, water disposal as well as treatment, and research and training. This was conveyed to the visiting Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and European Affairs, Didier Reynders, by Commerce and Industry Minister, Anand Sharma, during his meeting in New Delhi. An official statement issued after the meeting said the visiting Belgian Minister offered expertise in water treatment, waste disposal and energy sector which would be useful in NMIZs .NMIZs will be mega industrial zones with world-class supporting infrastructure.The government is offering incentives such as exemption from capital gains tax and a liberalised labour and environment norms to promote these zones.

Laisenia Qarase- Former Fiji Prime Minister, the last democratically elected leader in the coup-plagued South Pacific nation, was sentenced to 12 months jail on 3 August after being found guilty of corruption. Mr. Qarase, who became prime minister in 2000 and was ousted in a military coup six years later, was convicted on nine charges of abuse of office and failing to discharge his duty when he was a public servant in the 1990s. The charges related to his time as a director of a government investment company called Fijian Holdings from 1992 to 1995, when prosecutors said he put the interests of his family and home village before the public.

Scientists at the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) in Pilani have developed a new bio-sensor device to detect arsenic content in drinking water. The device can be operated by a layman and is based on a rare combination of bio-engineering and electronics. The hand-held device, the size of a mobile phone and presently undergoing field testing, promises to be immensely useful for millions of people inhabiting the river basins of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna in India and Bangladesh reported to be affected by arsenic contamination. Nearly 50 crore people are estimated to be at risk across Utttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Bangladesh due to high arsenic content in drinking water. High intake of arsenic along with malnourishment and lack of medical care worsens the life of people, especially children, in the arsenic-affected regions.
